Download Spotlight on SQL Server Enterprise from http://software.dell.com/SoSSEReview To my surprise many of the DBA's have not taken a holiday for quite a sometime. Why? The answer was simple. Due to my job. What I realized is that DBAs do want to take a break from their work and enjoy time with their friends and family, however, they are not able to take breaks. This is not a healthy environment. You need to have a transparent system where you know what is going on in your server with a single glance and ease of access to more information Sessions demonstrate the various details like: How many sessions are open? How many different computers are connected? How many active sessions there are? What is the SQL Server response time?
Download Spotlight on SQL Server (http://software.dell.com/sqlserveralarms) to set up custom alerts for crisis level or unusual activity. Managing SQL Server requires performing many tasks, including maintenance and monitoring. Maintenance can be scheduled and performed via jobs, but monitoring takes some human touch to: ensure real issues are addressed and ignore non-critical items until all crises items are solved. Monitoring SQL Server can be taxing, unless you set up a system for doing so. In order to have a proper monitoring system you need to identify what needs to be monitored, how you are alerted and what items are critical. Spotlight on SQL Server allows you to set up custom alerts for crisis level or unusual activity. An example might be when a CPU runs at 90% for more than five minutes during business hours. You can dictate what you what to be alerted about, whether you are alerted or what alternative actions to take, and when the item is deemed critical.
Index fragmentation happens when a new record is inserted into a current database. It is like adding a new name to a phone book, there is no room and the name has to be placed out of order, or the name has to be taken out of the phone book, then there is a blank space, making the phone book longer than it needs to be. Therefore taking longer to read it, back it up, and recover it. If you do not defragment your indexes, your database has to cache all of those blank records, wasting memory. Many defragmentation scripts are set to run as part of a maintenance routine, whether they need it or not. This causes extra items on the transaction log, the longer the backups take, the longer the restores take. Spotlight on SQL Server alerts you when defragmentation needs to occur. Are you terrified to leave your desk and hit the food-truck because you’re afraid those deadlock alerts will pile up unseen? Your mobile app can communicate securely with Spotlight on SQL Server Enterprise, or any other SQL Server Monitoring Tools, which can then acknowledge and eventually remove the alarm. If the next bite of your burrito (or another, more pressing problem) takes precedence, you can snooze the alarm and decide when you next want to be reminded about it. The rise of better mobile SQL Server monitoring means you can have lunch where you want—and package your work to go instead.
