Whats So Special about Digital Cameras?
  • No film to buy or get developed.
  • Pictures are recorded on a computer chip inside
    of a small plastic case (memory stick).
  • Pictures can then be printed and stored on a
    computer hard disk. There are no negatives to
    lose.
  • View and print your own pictures immediately or
    take them to a photo shop or kiosk for printing.

  • Get an inexpensive digital camera, look at the
    instruction guide and start taking some pictures.

BASIC CAMERA STUFF
  • Viewfinder
  • Exposure button find it
  • Lens Cap must be off
  • Battery must be charged up
  • Memory stick must be in the camera
  • Learn the settings for indoor, and outdoor.

A FEW TIPS
  • Exposure press and hold until the green light
    flashes.
  • Center the subject or slightly left of center.
  • Hold the camera steady, elbows in.
  • Check the light at the location of your subject,
    not where you are standing with the camera.

CAMERA HAZARDS
  • Moisture and also rainstorms.
  • Heat do not leave your camera in the car.
  • Hot buttered popcorn is not good.
  • Smudgy fingerprints on the lens.
  • Do not store your camera in the kitchen or in
    your cosmetic bag.

HOW CAN I USE THE DIGITAL CAMERA WITH MY STUDENTS?

1. MAKE PLACE CARDS
  • Write your students names on cardstock (8x11)
  • folded in half to stand on the table.
  • Take pictures of your students Digital or SLR.
  • Paste the picture on the opposite side of the
    students name.
  • Have the students practice introducing themselves
    and other students in the class.
  • Students can pick up their cards when they enter.

2. Favorite Foods Bulletin Board
  • Take each students picture and view them on a TV
    monitor of LCD projector. Ask the students to
    write down their names and their favorites foods.
    Print the students names and favorite food
    under the picture, using a felt marker. At the
    top of the bulletin board, make a title,
    FAVORITE FOODS. Arrange the pictures to fill
    the bulletin board.

And just how am I supposed to do that?
  • Heres how to do it
  • Take the photos
  • Connect AV cable to both the camera and the PC
  • Open Memory stick on the PC
  • Print pictures at the top center of a plain sheet
    of paper.
  • Students write their names and Favorite Food
    below their photo.
  • You make the Title Favorite Foods and arrange
    the papers on the bulletin board.

Heres what you need to do Favorite Foods
  • Get your supplies together
  • digital camera, fully charged battery
  • a-v cable
  • TV with red, yellow and white jacks
  • PC with a-v connection (USB)
  • Printer, printer paper, felt markers
  • Install the disk that comes with your
    camera.

Heres exactly how to do it
  • Camera demo
  • Install the software on your PC
  • Connect the av cable to camera and PC
  • Select Memory Stick to see your pictures. Its
    like another drive under Desktop.
  • Print or Save.

3. Picture and A Story
  • Print the students pictures and ask them to
    write a paragraph or a poem.
  • The compositions can be typed in Word or
    handwritten.
  • Paste the poem or paragraph under the picture.
  • Display work around the room.

4. Picture/Story by Computer
  • Copy the pictures to the Hard Drive of your PC.
  • Insert the picture on a Word document.
  • Let the students type stories and paragraphs
    under the picture and Save to the Hard Disk.
  • Edit, Print and Save for a Portfolio.

5. Class Project in Storyboard Form
  • Take pictures of each phase of the project.
  • Make a Storyboard putting the pictures in order.
  • Have the students write captions for each
    picture. Let the class choose which caption
    should go with each picture.
  • Put the pictures in order on the Bulletin
  • Board.

6. Group Projects
  • Take a picture of each team doing their project.
  • Print the pictures and let the teams make a
    display of the pictures and write a description
    of how they did their project.
  • Display the story under the pictures.

7. PowerPoint Stories and Pictures
  • Embed graphic images into a Powerpoint
    presentation for a slide show of your students
    work.
  • Insert photos or clip art to illustrate the
    students story.
  • Limit the slides to 5 or 6 for the first project.

8. Field Trip Pictures
  • Take pictures of a field trip or school activity.
    Let the students write captions for each
    picture. Make a bulletin board display or a
    PowerPoint presentation for the class to enjoy.
    Print and display along with materials or reports
    from the trip.

9. My Family Project
  • Bring snapshots of family pictures. Mount them
    on tagboard. Take digital pictures, print and
    display. If you have computers in your room, the
    students can create a Word document and add
    information about their families at the bottom of
    the page.

My Story by Computer
  • Help the students write about 5/6 slides about
    their childhood, schooling, job and coming to
    America. Use PowerPoint and put just one or two
    sentences per slide.
  • Have the students bring pictures of themselves,
    or take pictures of them. Insert the pictures
    into the Powerpoint presentation. Students can
    present their own show for the whole class.

10. Greeting Card
  • Transfer student pictures into a greeting card by
    using Microsoft Publisher.
  • Have the students create a personalized greeting
    card with their own greeting.
  • Insert their own pictures into the card instead
    of the clip art image.
