Language Arts
Our Language Arts program is a fully integrated,
literature based curriculum which encompasses the
skills and conventions of reading, writing and
oral communication. We focus on reading with
comprehension, literary response and analysis.
We use Harcourt Publications as our reader
resource because each story is actual 2nd grade
friendly literature. Writing is done daily
through Write Traits among other tools of the
trade. Our students will focus on creative
writing, narrative, poetry, descriptive,
persuasive, fables, book-making ETC. Oral
communication consists of presentations,
expressing ideas through plays, choral reading,
storytelling and active daily participation in
Morning Meeting.

Supplemental Language Arts
Computer Students will attend Computer Lab and
work on projects integrated with the reading,
social studies or science content. Spelling
Weekly 15 (plus 2 BONUS) word list. At end of
week, test on words. Reading log folders
Students are encouraged to read nightly for at
least 15 min. and log the title and page or
chapter count in their folders. Students may
read independently but it is always a plus for a
parent or older siblings to read aloud a higher
level book. Students should read minimally for
a total time period of 60 minutes each
week. Accelerated Reader - The student reads a
book from the book list, then tests his or her
knowledge and comprehension of the book by
answering multiple choice questions on the
computer.

HOMEWORK GUIDELINES
In general, your child will have homework
Monday- Thursday. Math - one to two pages per
night - practice/reinforcement of pages covered
in class Spelling -Monday - Wednesday 1
page per night, reinforcing the weeks
words. Monday-Thursday Spelling Sentences
Worksheet, due Friday. Students are to use all
fifteen spelling words in at least five super
sentences. Friday (or the last day of the
school week) - Test Reading Log - each HW
night, the students will bring home a book
(chosen by the teacher or themselves on Library
Tuesdays) to read for approx. 15 min.. Each book
should be recorded in the entry spot in their
log. If the book is a chapter book, they record
the chapter or page numbers they are read that
night, and keep the book until theyve finished
it. There is no deadline as long as they are
reading each night. We work towards reading
fluency and building a stronger interest in or
love of reading. Science Social Studies will
be assigned less frequently -usually project
based. There should be no more than 30 minutes
of homework per night, including 15 min. of
reading. Homework is given as a means of review
to keep parents involved their
childs education. Please review planner
homework daily. Homework is ultimately your
childs responsibility. -)
